Aggregations: Paper Sculpture by Kwang Young Chun

http://www.towson.edu/asianarts/events/index.asp

My sculpture teacher has required us to go to all the exhibitions at the school and this one was the first, however when I saw the artwork on the post card to promote the event I really wanted to go regardless if was an assignment. I was marveled by the pictures of his work before I even went to the show because his artwork appeared to have so much depth. When I was actually able to see the artwork in person I was taken aback by the fact that the parts of the artwork that appeared to have depth were actually flat and naturally shaded black from natural dyes. What was really incredible about Kwang Young Chun work was the many, many, many, little paper wrapped pieces that were fitted together like a puzzle. It was really beautiful. His design and concept were so simple but those little pieces created so much detail. I was able to see the hard work and its must have taken so much time but by the way the artist talked about it, he really enjoyed making it despite the time consumption. It is pretty inspirational. I hope to have the time to look at it again.

Blog 2: Artwork I've Created.

My favorite fruit are pomegranates and I had to create a ceramic piece that was representational while I was attending College of Southern Maryland. I wanted to keep it simple so fruit was the answer, however, it sort of kicked my in the butt later. To make the pomegranates I had to make 4 balls of clay, cut them in half, then hollow them out, and then slip and score the halves back to together. Firing an entire ball of clay would probably cause an explosion while it is in the kiln and so hollowing it was what had to be done as well as providing an air hole at the top. Yet, having to hollow them out actually created a more natural fruit shape so I'm grateful but it was timing consuming when I was smoothing out seams lines. After it was fired I put on a red glaze that actually looks more like it belongs to an apple rather than pomegranate but I still think the color turned out well enough even though I would've liked more variation. The bowl they sit in is also made my me. I used an plastic bowl as a guide and used a piecing method that I smoothed on the inside. After it was fired I dipped it in a mystery glaze so the color could've came out as anything which I thought was cool.

So my second piece was also done when i was at community college in the same class ceramic scuplture class as my pomegranates. For this assignment I got to create a piece that was non-representational. The piece is made up of three pieces: small, medium and large. It sculpted them from a large solid piece of clay and then hollowed them and poke tiny holes inside to prevent exploding the kiln while firing. I glazed only parts on each piece and left the rest unglazed. I like the smooth texture of the glazed portions and the rough sandy texture of the clay.  I also like how them seem to become a coiled tighter. I called them my Swirlies because I really don't know what to call them. Now they sit behind my couch infront of my apartment patio door. They are pretty heavy so I wanted to put them somewhere more permanent.

Yes that happens to my troublemaker dog in the picture.

My last piece(for now) is from the printmaking class I took over summer that I fell in love with. So this piece is a made by creating a callograph or a sort of template/stamp. After i made the template I would put ink mixed with a product called easy wipe on it. After applying the ink I used a technique called wiping where I would wipe away the ink till I felt enough would be gone. Run it through the press after many other steps in the process and TADA!! I made a print of my callograph. Printmaking has many process but in the end it so worth it.

This piece in particular is actually made of 2 callographs that i specially made to be printed together and to be printed separately. So i technically get 3 different prints from the 2 callographs. After printing all of them in black and white and I went along and experimented in using color with the smaller callograph.   so here they are in blue, purple, and red.

My entire theme for the series I needed to make was outer space. The theme just came to be. I don't know why, but it is what it is. So their are actually 4 or 5 other pieces that go with this one (that will probably end up here soon.)

(sorry for the quality of my photos. I dont own an expensive camera so I have to make my phone work.)

any question feel free to ask:)

Intentions

I'm really happy to start a new blog that will be more professional and art related. It will be unlike my Tumblr blog. That blog is a hot mess of ALL the random things that reflect my personality, including art but my Blogger will be saved from that. It will be dedicated to art! It's actually something I was going to do on Tumblr but now its home will be here.

I really wanted to make this blog for mostly sculpture but after looking at my assignments for my class i can't do that(maybe after the class ends). So I plan to post a wide variety of artwork that catches my attention, some of my own artwork, record processes I used to create some of my work and explore other artist techniques that may be useful to me. I hope that I will feel a little more comfortable blogging my artwork on here. Its not that I am uncomfortable by artwork because I love the things I make but I don't like putting it on the internet. I don't trust people on my other blog to not steal and respect my work because they don't. People take credit for other people's work all the time on Tumblr so im hesitant to put mine there. So here I hope for professionalism and respect(and i will watermark or find another way to secure  my artwork as mine).

With blogging experience from owning a Tumblr blog I found that is very easily to connect with people who have similar interests and are of a different ethnicity. Who doesn't like to meet people from a different country? Your crazy if you don't think its cool that its that easy to connect with a different culture. But I hope its turns out similar here as well. To the classmates who are awesome and love creating art using the computer, I hope to learn from you and make the concepts in this class more useful to me.
